2023 Fall Show Highlights

The Illinois Orchid Society would like to thank everyone who attended our recent orchid show at the Chicago Botanic Garden, as well as the Batavia Orchid Society and Wisconsin Orchid Society for participating with brilliant displays of their members’ plants.

Visitors enjoyed 22 exhibits of live orchid flowers and artwork. The show featured 350 blooming orchids selected for the competition from the private collections of many orchid growers from greater Chicago and Wisconsin. The Chicago Botanic Garden also displayed their own stunning orchids from their emerging permanent orchidarium collection, expertly curated by Johanna Hutchens. Exhibited plants represented hundreds of varieties of orchid from every alliance, with origins all over the world.

Awarding of trophies and ribbons was administered by the Chicago AOS Judging Center. In addition to the category trophies for Best of Class, the Illinois Orchid Society grants five Special Awards.

  • President’s Choice, awarded to Stanhopea occulata.

  • Show Chair Award for best miniature or specimen plant, awarded to Coelogyne ovalis.

  • IOS Trophy for best display by a society member, awarded to Orquídeas exóticas en todo el mundo.

  • Frank Kuper Award for best Cypripedium alliance plant, awarded to Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum var. esquirolei.

  • Joseph Koss Award for best species plant, awarded to Acinetia chrystantha.

The American Orchid Society Show Trophy for best overall exhibit was awarded to George Titterton et al for the exhibit La Familia de Orquídeas.

The Chicago Horticultural Society Award for the plant receiving the highest point score in AOS judging was awarded to Arides odorata ‘Chicago Botanic Garden’, AM/AOS, and resides in the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Orchidarium collection.

Our next orchid show will be the weekend of March 9th & 10th in 2024, at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
